The Orthodox Metropolitan Cathedral (also called the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of Sao Paulo), located in Sao Paulo, Brazil, and is the headquarters of the Archdiocese of the Greek Orthodox Church of Antioch of Sao Paulo, is also from all over Brazil. It is an example of Byzantine architectural construction that can be appreciated in South America. Its design, whose construction began in the 1940s, was inspired by the Hagia Sophia, built in the then capital of the Byzantine Empire, Constantinople (present-day Istanbul).
Built under the supervision of Eng. Paulo Taufick Camasmie, this cathedral - among the Orthodox, one of the largest in the world - was initially meant to be a perfect replica of the Hagia Sophia, but had to be altered as a result of the building work. from the subway. Joseph Trabulsi was personally chosen by King Faruk of Egypt as one of the artists who participated in his decoration, as well as several specially hired Russian artists.
One of the distinctive architectural features of this work compared to other Orthodox churches is the iconostasis made of marble, when it is usually made of wood.
